SANGKURIANG

A long time ago, there lived a beautiful girl named Dayang Sumbi in West Java. Her beauty and intelligence made Prince Kahyangan of the Heavenly Kingdom want her as his wife. The prince asked  his father for permission to marry Dayang Sumbi. However, the Kahyangan people  could never coexist with humans, but his father agreed on one condition that if they had a child, the prince would become a dog.
They  married and Dayang Sumbi gave birth to a son named Sangkuriang. Then the prince became a dog named Tumang. He was very smart and handsome like his father. Sangkuriang liked to hunt animals and looked for fruits to eat. While hunting one day,  Sangkuriang accidentally killed Tumang. He went home and told his mother about the dog.  Driven by grief and anger, he grabbed a large spoon and hit Sangkuriang's head with it. Dayang Sumbi was so sad and started crying because she just lost her husband. Sangkuriang is confused. How can his mother love a dog more than him? Sangkuriang then decided to run away from his home.  Many years later, Sangkuriang found a house of a beautiful woman. He didn't know she was his mother and fell in love with her. Sangkuriang forced her to marry him, but Dayang Sumbi could not accept it because she knew  the boy was her son.
She fealized that she must do something to stop Sangkuriang from marrying her. Dayang Sumbi decided to ask her the impossible demand of marrying him so that she would give up. He asked Sangkuriang to build him a big boat during the night.
Undoubtedly, Sangkuriang agreed to this condition and worked hard to fulfill this condition. Then he told the spirits to cut down the trees and build a boat. A few moments before dawn, Sangkuriang and his spirit guide had almost finished the boat.
Dayang Sumbi immediately woke up all the women in the village and asked them to wave a long red scarf. All the women in the village waved their red scarves, pretending it  was dawn. Betrayed by a false dawn, the rooster crowed and the peasants rose to a new day.
Sangkuriang immediately left work. In all his anger he kicked the unfinished boat. The boat flew and landed in the valley. Then the boat  became a mountain called Tangkuban Perahu.
